The Lasting Impact of Kindness

“Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.”
~ Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Over and over again, I am struck by the enduring impact of kindness.  Recently, I pulled out a necklace I had not worn for a while and I remembered that early on in my tenure at an organization, a colleague complimented me on it.  I had just started working at that place and didn’t know too many people there, so her kindness meant a lot.  Several years later, I remember.  But I imagine that she probably does not.  How many of us remember compliments that we give people?

We never know what is going on in someone’s life…  She could be going through a major challenge or he could simply be nervous about being new somewhere or she could just be having a bad day.  With a word or a smile, we have the opportunity to lift that person’s spirit.  And years later, that person may just remember and be comforted by our kindness.  The thought of it might make that person smile – again.  Even if we have long forgotten.
