"When we honestly ask ourselves
which person in our lives means the most to us, we often find that it is those
who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share
our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand."
~ Henri Nouwen
There is an
older woman who usually sits behind us at church. Although we exchange smiles and greetings, until
recently I did not know her name. This
past Sunday, she introduced herself. At
one point during the service, I felt her hand on my shoulder -- in a very
reassuring kind of way. I wasn't sure
what triggered it, but I did not doubt for a moment that it was a sign of
friendship.
