“If the only prayer you ever say in your
entire life is thank you, it will be enough.”
~ Meister Eckhart
I recently
visited a friend at her retirement community in another city. I had not seen her for a few years, so it was
a treat to be able to sit and talk for a couple of hours. Our conversation meandered through various
topics. Several times, this octogenarian
– who is also a member of a religious order – reflected on how blessed she
feels. And the reasons for her gratitude
are many, ranging from how comfortable and well taken care of she is to
memories of her father who died more than 50 years ago. “My favorite prayer is ‘thank you,’ she said
with a twinkle in her blue eyes. My
friend has a quick wit and a self-deprecating sense of humor. And we laughed
and laughed. I am so grateful for the
opportunity to hear her perspective and her wisdom.
