Kindness and Peace

“Did I offer peace today?  Did I bring a smile to someone’s face?  Did I say words of healing?  Did I let go of my anger and resentment?  Did I forgive?  Did I love?  These are the real questions.  I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.”
~ Henri Nouwen

I live in a community known for its erratic and not-so-nice drivers.  That makes for interesting experiences every day – whether it’s the honking from impatience or the gestures…  So I was quite surprised on a recent morning when a young man I let into the lane ahead of me flashed a peace sign with his fingers.  Of all the things I have seen on the road, I have never had someone offer the sign of peace.  It made me smile.  I don’t know how much of a message he intended to convey, but no matter.  I took it as a reminder of the season, and silently thanked him and wished him well.
