On a recent hot Saturday afternoon, a neighborhood police officer took a step back
as he was about to enter a pizzeria to hold the door open for a woman who was
walking out with a pizza box and two bags. The police officer smiled, and the woman
smiled back and thanked him. The officer
could not have known that the woman was tired and that her heart was weary
after a rough week. But his small act of
kindness lifted the woman's spirits and her smile back at him lingered as she walked
to her car.
