"The friend who can be silent with
us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of
grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing... not healing, not
curing... that is a friend who cares."
~ Henri Nouwen
I recently
attended the funeral Mass for the father of one of my childhood friends. Toward the end of the Mass, I watched as a
group of about 30 men filed out of the pews and went to the front of the church
where they sang a song with arms around each other. The solidarity was incredibly moving. They were part of a retreat ministry at the
church and were "brothers" of the gentleman who had passed.
