"For beautiful eyes, look for the
good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that
you are never alone."
~ Audrey Hepburn
It is amazing
how so much of what we say isn't really nice.
There is the negative comment about someone else -- typically not
present; there is the put down of someone present -- subtle or otherwise; there
is the question raised that carries within it not just curiosity, but judgment;
there is the snarky comment or laugh at someone else's expense that generates a
shared chuckle and the perception of closeness among those involved... I have wondered what it would be like to only
speak in ways that contribute positively to the conversation -- completely
aspirational for me. But then there is
my lovely friend. She seems to always
find the good in situations; she is supportive; and she never expresses
curiosity that is not based in genuine concern.
