― Vaughn Ripley
On a recent
evening at our neighborhood pizza joint, I went to the counter to pick up our
food. As I reached for the tray that
included a filled-to-the-brim pitcher of water, a gentleman standing nearby
grabbed the pitcher and took it to our table.
"You probably could have made it," he said with generous
chivalry. "Yes," I said,
"but it would not have been pretty."
He was kind
in helping me with the water and also in letting me know that he did not
completely doubt my capacity to do it myself.
